Summer Harvest...Saturday Census

I have been busy
and out of pocket this week!
So glad I am back in time to
to participate in Jenny Matlock's

It is a themed writing meme.
Each Saturday, Ms. Matlock will give
a writing prompt.
Your assignment...
if you choose to accept it...
is to write a 100 word story.
Yes, 100 words or less...
not including the "prompt words".
Oh, and the prompt words can
be used anywhere in your story!

Sounds like fun, doesn't it?
The writing prompt is good for the entire week,
so you can join in at any time!

THIS WEEK'S PROMPT:

It's true, the smell of freshly mowed grass
can stay with you for years, for decades,

So here is my contribution

_________________________________________________________

It wasn't just a roll in the hay. It was forever.

I was eighteen and ripe for the picking. The day he came to town, heat waves were dancing mirages on the asphalt country roads. He was part of the wheat harvest caravan that migrated south each summer. His job was to harvest the best crop our town had to offer and then disappear, leaving scraped, fertile earth behind.

We met in the park. The sun was setting. Children had retreated home for sandwiches and lemonade in front of box fans. The hum of a lawnmower filled the air.

It's true, the smell of freshly mowed grass can stay with you for many years, for decades, forever.

An "asphalt Country Roads"? That pretty much describes us but I love how you worked that, and you were "eighteen and ripe for the pickin"! I'm ready to read more! Good job my friend.

Take care, Sue

This was beautifully written. I could definitely see this as the beginning of a wonderful book. My favorite line? "retreated home for sandwiches and lemonade in front of box fans." I was instantly transported to the hot summer evening of my childhood. Bravo! Kathy

Malisa, Hi! I fixed your link!

This is wonderful. I love the imagery and the feeling of hot sultry summer you evoked with such few words.

You are quite a talented writer.

I really appreciate you linking up.

Oh, I simply must hear more. You set such a vivid mood with your writing! I'm finding 100 words to be soooo restrictive, yet at the same time, challenging me to be tight and concise. You really have that down. Nice job!
